This year, EurekAlert! is offering travel awards to early-career science journalists and student journalists that are studying to be professional reporters. Applicants must fulfill these requirements in order to be eligible to receive the travel award:

  • No more than five (5) years of experience as a professional science reporter or freelancer - or - current enrollment in a science journalism program at an accredited university
  • Based in one of the following countries in the Balkans and Eastern Europe: Albania; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bulgaria; Croatia; Czechia; Estonia; Greece; Hungary; Kosovo; Latvia; Lithuania; Moldova; Montenegro; North Macedonia; Poland; Romania; Serbia; Slovakia; Slovenia; and Ukraine
  • Meet EurekAlert!'s journalist-member eligibility guidelines
  • Be able to obtain a visa and travel to a future AAAS Annual Meeting within the next two (2) years

Applications must include all of the following to be considered complete:

  • Proof of employment and length of service with an accredited news media outlet (What is an accredited news media outlet?) - or - proof of current, active enrollment in a journalism program at an accredited university
  • Three (3) original, bylined science reporting work samples published between January 1, 2025, to present (translations not required)
  • Biographical statement and photo
  • Brief responses to two (2) essay questions (in your preferred language)

Optional: Letter of recommendation from an editor, senior reporter, professor, instructor, or other journalism mentor

Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements listed above and incomplete applications will not be considered for the award.
