Applicants must meet these requirements to be eligible to receive the travel award:
- No more than five (5) years of experience as a professional science reporter or freelancer - or - current enrollment in a science journalism program at an accredited university
- Based in the following countries in the Balkans and Eastern Europe: Albania; Bosnia and Herzegovina; Bulgaria; Croatia; Czechia; Estonia; Greece; Hungary; Kosovo; Latvia; Lithuania; Moldova; Montenegro; North Macedonia; Poland; Romania; Serbia; Slovakia; Slovenia; and Ukraine
- Meet EurekAlert!'s journalist-member eligibility guidelines
- Be able to travel to a future AAAS Annual Meeting within the next two (2) years
- 2027 AAAS Annual Meeting: February 18-20, in Chicago, Illinois, USA
- 2028 AAAS Annual Meeting: TBA
Applications must include all of the following:
- Proof of employment and length of service (five years or fewer) with an accredited news media outlet (What is an accredited news media outlet?) - or - proof of current enrollment at an accredited university
- Three (3) original, bylined science reporting work samples published between January 1, 2025, to present (translations not required)
- Short biographical statement and photo
- Brief responses to two (2) essay questions (in your preferred language)
Optional: Letter of recommendation from an editor, senior reporter, professor, instructor, or other journalism mentor
Applicants who do not meet the eligibility requirements listed above and incomplete applications will not be considered for the award.
Working proficiency in English is highly recommended for this award.
